The Importance of Preventive Dentistry to Your Overall Health

Much to our chagrin, a visit to the dentist fills many patients with dread. However, with a comprehensive preventive dental plan, you can greatly reduce the number of visits to see us while keeping your smile bright and your teeth healthy.

Preventive Dentistry: Defined

It’s simple: preventive dentistry encompasses all those things you need to do to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. Proper dental care reduces your chances of getting cavities, gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal disease, worn enamel and more.

Preventive Dentistry Activities

So, what do you need to do to maintain good dental health?

  1. Brush your teeth - This is the pivotal point around which all preventive care revolves. We recommend brushing your teeth after every meal or at least twice a day, with a good quality fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush at least 4 times each year.
  2. Floss - We recommend daily flossing to remove food particles from between teeth and to make your gums strong and healthy.
  3. Visit us - We enjoy working with you to keep your teeth clean and healthy. This means making an appointment with us every 6 months for a cleaning and overall checkup. If we detect any problems, we can fix them right away to prevent pain or further deterioration.
  4. Watch the foods you eat - As you already know, foods high in sugar wreak havoc with teeth, promoting quick decay. Be sure and eat good healthy foods and drink plenty of water.

What to Expect During a Cleaning

Although you may be vigilant about brushing your teeth, not all substances, such as bacteria, plaque and tartar can be removed easily. Removing these requires specialized instruments and techniques. Our dental hygienist will closely examine your teeth, looking for plaque and tartar. These may be scraped off using a special tool. A special, high-speed machine and brush will be used to clean and polish the teeth surfaces. You may be given a fluoride rinse to strengthen your teeth. When the cleaning is done, the hygienist will tell you how to improve your brushing techniques.

The Benefits of a Preventive Dentistry Plan

Besides a beautiful, healthy smile, there are many benefits to a preventive dental plan. First, you’ll have greatly reduced chances of getting cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease and jaw bone loss. Your risk of developing serious complications of poor oral health, such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, respiratory disease, and cancer are lessened. Some studies have even linked poor dental practices to premature birth and low birth weight for pregnant women. Think about the cost factor! The fewer dental issues you develop, the less you will spend on dental care.
