Pediatric & Adult Dentistry Q&A

If my child still has baby teeth, why are routine dental visits necessary?

Even though baby teeth will eventually fall out, it is still vitally important for your child to have routine dentist checkups every six months to ensure their teeth and gums are as healthy as possible. Baby teeth serve as “placeholders” for adult teeth, and if they become decayed or damaged, it can affect the adult teeth that are forming beneath the gums. Regular checkups also help ensure problems with growth and development are caught in their earliest stages when they can be most easily treated. Plus, decay and gum disease can still cause considerable pain, resulting in problems in school, trouble sleeping, and even nutrition problems. Finally, seeing the dentist regularly helps your child overcome dental anxiety and establishes a pattern of good oral hygiene that can help provide them with a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a clear protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to help seal tiny fissures in the tooth surface that can provide “hiding places” for harmful bacteria. By having your child's teeth sealed, you can help avoid painful and damaging decay and avoid the need for fillings.

Does my child need to have dental x-rays?

Yes, dental x-rays are an essential part of good dental care for children as well as for adults. X-rays help the dentist assess your child's teeth, including adult teeth still located beneath the gum. They can also help determine if orthodontic care may be needed or if an extraction might help avoid overcrowding and reduce the need for alignment in the future. Plus, x-rays help spot other issues in their earliest stages when treatment is simpler and less costly.

Everyone was so friendly! And they all took the necessary time to explain what was being done and would be done.
